Welcome to Lake Muskegon

Muskegon Lake is a 4,149 acre inland coastal lake located in Muskegon County, Michigan along the east shoreline of Lake Michigan. The Area of Concern (AoC) includes the entire lake with the lake being separated from Lake Michigan by sand dunes. The Muskegon River flows through the lake before emptying into Lake Michigan. Additional tributaries include Mosquito Creek, Ryerson Creek, Ruddiman Creek, Green Creek, and Four Mile Creek. The immediate inland area is primarily residential and industrial, with chemical and petrochemical companies, foundries, a pulp and paper mill, and other industries located on the lake or within its immediate watershed.

According to Michigan standards, Muskegon Lake is a fine fishery. Muskegon Lake has also been described as the most popular and valuable fishery in western Michigan. It supports excellent populations of northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, suckers, sunfish, crappie, and bullheads. However, many of the highly productive bays have been dredged or filled for marinas or other development. Every two years or so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredges the channel connecting Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan. The cost of analyzing dredge spoils is very high.

Muskegon Lake hugs the Lake Michigan coastline. At 4,150 acres, Muskegon Lake is decent sized and at its deepest point, it is approximately 79 feet. However, much of the lake is shallower than that. There are a wide variety of conditions you will find on the lake, including sandy bottoms that offer good bedding opportunities, muck-filled holes that seem to have no end and everything in between. Muskegon Lake offers the visiting angler opportunities to catch a wide variety of fish species in the early spring. The lake boasts variety of launches and lodging available for anglers. Muskegon offers a wealth of fishing opportunities including panfish, bass, walleye and pike. There are about 12 launches on Muskegon Lake as well as a state park on the north end of the lake. As the ice begins to give way and the water temperature begins to rise, there are numerous places that offer good pan fishing.

Snug Harbor, along the state park shoreline, offers anglers a wonderful opportunity for bluegills and sunfish in 3 to 6 feet of water. For anglers who do not have access to a boat, there is plenty of shoreline and parking available at Snug Harbors. Seven to 8-inch fish are common here, with the occasional 9 to 10-inch 'gill every once in a while. As far as a fishing rig goes, almost anything will do. Typically, a nightcrawler with a bobber is all that is required.
